Chronicles of the Coast

Clonakilty Distillery has launched Chronicles of the Coast, a new series of highly limited, collectible Irish whiskeys inspired by the stories, folklore and mythic figures of Ireland’s Atlantic coastline.

Each release takes its identity from a single playing card — four times a year, a single cask will be selected, bottled, individually numbered and released under a character drawn from Irish mythology and folklore. Each bottling is strictly limited. Each one tells a different story.

The series opens with The Kings Collection — legendary figures of power and lore, each illustrated on the bottle. Queens, Jacks and Aces collections will follow.

First Release — Meet the King of Spades

The King of Spades is Manannán mac Lir, Celtic god of the sea, king of Tír na nÓg, a realm beyond the edge of the known world where time stands still and the living never age. Mac Lir crossed open water on horseback as easily as others cross a field. Sailors spoke of a figure in the rolling mists between worlds, guiding some safely home, leading others into legend. A god for whom the boundary between land and ocean simply does not exist.

This expression is finished in a rare apricot brandy cask, adding layers of fruit and sweetness to Clonakilty’s signature coastal character.

Manannán mac Lir is available to Clonakilty Crew Whiskey Club members via the Clonakilty Distillery online shop on 23 June @ 9am.

Tasting Notes

Nose: An initial burst of stone and orchard fruit, giving way to toffee and freshly cut wood shavings.

Palate: A large, syrup-like mouthfeel with dried apricot, orange zest and almonds, finishing with lingering sticky toffee.

Chronicles of the Coast was built with the Clonakilty Crew. Members voted on the name of the series. They voted on the finish of the first whiskey. Their fingerprints are on every bottle and that relationship continues with every release. Before any bottle goes to public sale, it goes to the Crew first.
